Core Web Vitals Explained: LCP, INP and CLS in Plain English
Core Web Vitals measure how fast, responsive and stable your website feels. Learn what LCP, INP and CLS mean, how to measure them and the practical fixes that work.
You have probably seen the term "Core Web Vitals" in a PageSpeed report or a Google Search Console email and wondered whether it matters for your business. In short, it does. Core Web Vitals are Google's way of measuring how a real visitor experiences your website: how quickly the main content appears, how fast the page responds to taps and clicks, and whether things jump around while it loads.
This guide explains each metric in plain English, shows you how to check your own site, and lists practical fixes that work for most business websites.
What are Core Web Vitals?
Core Web Vitals are three metrics that Google uses as part of its page experience signals. Each has a "good" threshold, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits, which means at least three out of four visits should meet it.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | Loading: when the main content appears | ≤ 2.5 seconds | > 4 seconds |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | Responsiveness: how fast the page reacts to input | ≤ 200 ms | > 500 ms |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | Visual stability: how much content moves unexpectedly | ≤ 0.1 | > 0.25 |
INP replaced the older First Input Delay (FID) metric in March 2024, so if you read older articles mentioning FID, INP is its successor.
LCP, INP and CLS explained simply
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
LCP is the time it takes for the largest visible element, usually a hero image, banner or main heading, to appear on screen. If your homepage has a large banner photo that takes five seconds to show on a mobile connection, your LCP is poor. Visitors see a blank or half-loaded page and many leave.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
INP measures the delay between a visitor's action, such as tapping a menu button or adding a product to the cart, and the page visibly responding. Slow INP usually comes from too much JavaScript running on the page, often from chat widgets, trackers, sliders and page builders.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
CLS measures unexpected movement. You have experienced it when you are about to tap a link and an advert or image loads above it, pushing everything down. Common causes are images without set dimensions, late-loading banners and web fonts that swap in and change text size.
How to measure Core Web Vitals
There are two kinds of data: field data from real Chrome users, and lab data from a simulated test. Google uses field data for search, while lab data is useful for diagnosing problems.
- PageSpeed Insights: enter any URL to see field data (if your site has enough traffic) at the top and a lab test with specific recommendations below.
- Google Search Console: the Core Web Vitals report groups your URLs into good, needs improvement and poor, separately for mobile and desktop. This is the best view of your whole site.
- Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools: run a lab test on any page, including pages not yet live.
- Chrome DevTools Performance panel: shows live LCP, INP and CLS values as you interact with a page.
Always check the mobile results first. Most Indian visitors browse on mid-range phones, often on variable mobile data, and that is where problems show up most clearly.
Practical fixes for LCP
Images are the most common cause of slow LCP on business websites. Start here:
- Convert images to modern formats. WebP files are usually much smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Our free WebP converter handles this in your browser.
- Compress and resize. Do not upload a 4000-pixel camera photo for a banner shown at 1400 pixels. Use the online image compressor to cut file size before uploading.
- Do not lazy-load the hero image. Lazy loading is great for images further down the page, but the main banner should load immediately, ideally with a preload hint or high fetch priority.
- Improve server response time. Good hosting, page caching and a CDN reduce the time before anything can load.
- Remove render-blocking resources. Inline critical CSS and defer stylesheets and scripts that are not needed for the first screen.
Practical fixes for INP and CLS
Improving INP
- Audit third-party scripts and remove any you no longer use, such as old tracking pixels or unused chat widgets.
- Load non-essential scripts with
deferor after user interaction. - Avoid heavy sliders and animation libraries where a simple layout works just as well.
- Break long JavaScript tasks into smaller pieces so the browser can respond to input in between.
Improving CLS
- Always set
widthandheightattributes (or a CSS aspect ratio) on images and videos. - Reserve space for banners, embeds and ads before they load.
- Use
font-display: swapwith fallback fonts of similar size, and preload your main web font. - Avoid inserting content above existing content unless the user asked for it.
Why Core Web Vitals matter for SEO and sales
Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, but not the biggest one. Relevant, helpful content still matters most. Where page experience really counts is when several pages are similarly useful: a faster, more stable page has an edge. More importantly, speed affects people directly. Visitors who wait for a page to load or tap the wrong button because the layout shifted are less likely to call, enquire or buy.
Improving Core Web Vitals is therefore best seen as part of a wider technical SEO and conversion effort rather than a box to tick. If you are preparing a new site, our website launch checklist includes performance checks to run before going live.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my PageSpeed Insights scores different every time I test?
The lab score varies with network conditions, server load and the test location. Small changes between runs are normal. Focus on the field data and the Search Console report, which reflect real visitors over the previous 28 days.
Do I need a score of 100 in PageSpeed Insights?
No. The performance score is a lab summary. What matters for search is whether your real-user LCP, INP and CLS meet the "good" thresholds. A score in the 80s or 90s with good field data is perfectly fine.
How long until fixes show up in Search Console?
Field data is collected over a rolling 28-day window, so improvements typically take a few weeks to appear fully. You can use the "Validate fix" option in Search Console to start tracking once changes are live.
