Parking QR Card: Stop Showing Your Phone Number on Your Car
Writing your mobile number on the car dashboard invites spam calls and privacy risks. A parking QR card lets people reach you when your car is blocking them, without seeing your number.
Walk through any residential colony, office car park or market lane in India and you will see it: a slip of paper on the dashboard with a mobile number written in marker, sometimes with "In case of wrong parking, please call". It is a thoughtful habit. In crowded cities, cars get double-parked, gates get blocked and someone needs a quick way to reach the owner.
The trouble is that anyone walking past can read, photograph and save that number. A parking QR card solves the same problem without putting your number on display. This article explains the risks and how to create a privacy-safe card with BaalBo Smart Park, our free tool.
The problem with a phone number on your car dashboard
A visible phone number does its job when a neighbour needs you to move your car. But the same number is equally visible to everyone else, and once it is noted down you have no control over where it goes. Some of the issues:
- Spam and telemarketing. Numbers collected from public places can end up on marketing lists, leading to unwanted calls and messages.
- Scam calls. Fraudsters who have your number, and can see your car model and location, have extra details to make a scam sound convincing.
- Harassment. A number on display can be misused for unwanted calls or messages. This is a particular concern for women and anyone who does not want strangers to have their personal number.
- Linking you to your routine. A number, a car and a regular parking spot together reveal more about you than you might intend.
- WhatsApp exposure. Your number usually leads straight to your WhatsApp profile, which may show your photo, name and status to anyone who saves it, depending on your privacy settings.
None of this means you should leave people with no way to reach you. Blocking someone's car with no contact option causes real frustration. The goal is to be reachable without being exposed.
What is a parking QR card?
A parking QR card is a small card you place on your dashboard or windscreen showing a QR code instead of your phone number. Someone who needs you to move your car scans the code with their phone camera and is given a way to contact you. Your number is not printed on the card for passers-by to read.
| Number on dashboard | Parking QR card | |
|---|---|---|
| Can people reach you about your car? | Yes | Yes, by scanning |
| Is your number visible to everyone? | Yes | No |
| Can it be photographed and saved? | Easily | The card can, but it does not display your number |
| Looks tidy | Often a handwritten note | A neat printed card |
How to create a privacy-safe parking QR card
BaalBo Smart Park creates a privacy-safe parking QR card. The process is simple:
- Open the tool. Go to BaalBo Smart Park on your phone or computer.
- Create your card. Follow the steps on the page to set up your parking QR card.
- Save or print it. Download the card and print it, ideally on thick paper or card, or get it laminated so it lasts in the heat.
- Display it. Place it on your dashboard or stick it on the inside of the windscreen where it can be seen and scanned from outside.
- Get contacted when needed. When someone needs you to move your car, they scan the QR code to reach you, without seeing your number.
Placement tips
- Keep the card on the side closest to the footpath or kerb, where people naturally approach the car.
- Make sure it is not covered by a sunshade, phone holder or the dashboard's reflection.
- Add a short printed line such as "Blocking you? Scan to contact the owner" so people know what the code is for.
- Do a test scan from outside the car, through the glass, in daylight.
- Replace the card if it fades or curls. Indian summers are hard on paper left behind a windscreen.
Who should use a parking QR card?
- Anyone who parks in shared spaces, such as apartment societies, office basements, hospital car parks and busy market streets.
- People who value privacy and would rather not have their personal number on public display.
- Families with several drivers, where one card on each car is simpler than a scribbled number that may be the wrong person's.
- Two-wheeler owners who park in crowded spots, provided there is a visible, weather-protected place to display the card.
- Small businesses with delivery vehicles, which can avoid exposing drivers' personal numbers.
Good parking etiquette still matters
A QR card makes it easier for people to reach you, but it is not a licence to park badly. A few reminders:
- Avoid blocking gates, driveways, emergency access routes and other cars whenever possible.
- If you must double-park briefly, stay nearby and keep your phone on.
- Respond quickly and politely when someone contacts you. That is the whole point of the card.
- Follow your society's or building's parking rules, and local traffic regulations.
Frequently asked questions
Is my phone number printed on the parking QR card?
No. The idea of a privacy-safe parking QR card is that people can reach you by scanning the code, without your number being shown on the card for anyone passing by to read.
Does the person scanning need a special app?
Most modern smartphones can scan QR codes with the built-in camera app or Google Lens, so a special app is usually not needed.
