How to Start an Online Store in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

A practical, step-by-step guide to starting an online store in India, from choosing products and GST basics to payments, shipping, product photos and your launch plan.

How to Start an Online Store in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting an online store in India has never been easier. UPI has made payments simple, courier aggregators reach small towns, and platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce let you launch without writing code. Yet many new sellers stall because they do not know what to do first, or they skip steps that cause problems later.

This guide walks you through the whole process in order, whether you are a home-based seller in Patna or a manufacturer in Muzaffarpur ready to sell directly to customers across India.

Step 1: Choose your niche and products

The most common mistake is trying to sell everything. A focused store is easier to market, easier to stock and easier for customers to trust.

  • Start with what you know. If your family makes Madhubani paintings, sattu products or handloom textiles, you already have an advantage in sourcing and story.
  • Check demand. Look at what people search for on Google, what sells on marketplaces and what competitors offer.
  • Do the maths. Work out product cost, packaging, shipping, gateway fees, returns and ad spend. If the margin is thin before marketing, it will disappear after.
  • Think about shipping. Light, non-fragile products are cheaper and safer to ship. Heavy or breakable items need careful packaging and pricing.

Begin with a small range of products you can source reliably. You can expand once you understand what customers actually buy.

Step 2: GST and business basics

Legal and tax requirements for online sellers in India change from time to time, so treat this as a general overview and confirm the current rules with a chartered accountant.

  • Business structure: Many small sellers start as a sole proprietorship. A partnership, LLP or private limited company may suit you better as you grow.
  • GST registration: Rules for online sellers depend on factors such as turnover, the type of goods and whether you sell through a marketplace or your own site. Some sellers need GST registration from the start, so check your situation early.
  • Bank account: A current account in the business name makes gateway approval and accounting simpler.
  • Policies: Prepare clear privacy, refund, shipping and terms pages. Payment gateways usually ask for these before approving your account.

Udyam (MSME) registration is also worth looking into, as it can help with some government schemes and benefits.

Step 3: Pick your platform and domain

Choosing a platform

You have three broad options:

  1. Marketplaces such as Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho give you instant traffic but charge commissions and control the customer relationship.
  2. Shopify is a hosted platform that is quick to set up and easy to manage.
  3. WooCommerce on WordPress gives you more control and customisation but needs hosting and maintenance.

Many sellers do both: they list on a marketplace for reach and run their own store to build a brand and keep better margins. We compare the two main store platforms in detail in our Shopify vs WooCommerce guide.

Choosing a domain

Pick a short, easy-to-spell name. A .com or .in domain both work well for Indian customers. Avoid hyphens and numbers that people may mishear when you say the name over the phone. Register the domain in your own name so you always control it.

Step 4: Set up payments, including UPI and COD

Indian gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Approval usually needs your KYC documents, bank details and a live website with policy pages.

Should you offer cash on delivery?

COD is still popular, especially for first-time buyers and in smaller towns. It improves conversion, but it also brings risks: higher return-to-origin (RTO) rates, delayed cash flow and extra courier charges.

  • Offer COD but consider a small COD fee or a minimum order value.
  • Confirm COD orders by phone or WhatsApp before dispatch.
  • Offer a small discount for prepaid UPI orders to nudge customers.
  • Restrict COD for pin codes or customers with repeated returns.

Step 5: Plan shipping and packaging

Unless you have your own delivery network, you will rely on couriers. Aggregators such as Shiprocket let you compare and book multiple courier partners from one dashboard, while companies such as Delhivery also work directly with sellers. Most integrate with Shopify and WooCommerce.

DecisionWhat to consider
Shipping chargesFree shipping above a threshold, flat rate or weight-based
PackagingSturdy, branded where possible, protective for fragile goods
Delivery areasCheck serviceable pin codes, especially for remote areas
ReturnsClear return window and process stated on your site

Courier rates depend on weight, dimensions, distance and volume, so get current quotes and include them in your product pricing.

Step 6: Take good product photos and write clear descriptions

Online, your photos are your shop window. You do not need an expensive studio; a modern phone, natural light and a plain background go a long way.

  • Show the product from several angles, plus a close-up of texture or detail.
  • Include a photo that shows scale, such as the product in a hand or in use.
  • Keep backgrounds and lighting consistent across the catalogue.
  • Compress images before uploading so pages load fast on mobile data. Our free image compressor and WebP converter help with this.

Descriptions should answer real questions: size, material, care instructions, what is in the box and delivery time. Write in simple language your customers use.

Step 7: Launch and market your store

A store without visitors makes no sales. Plan your launch before the site goes live.

  1. Tell your existing network. Friends, family, WhatsApp groups and existing offline customers are your first buyers.
  2. Use social media. Instagram and Facebook work well for visual products. Reels showing how products are made can build trust.
  3. Run small, targeted ads. Start with a modest daily budget, test a few creatives and scale only what works.
  4. Invest in SEO. Good product titles, category pages and helpful blog content bring free traffic over time.
  5. Collect reviews. Ask happy customers for reviews and photos. Social proof matters greatly to new buyers.

Track every order source so you know which channels deserve more time and money.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start an online store in India?

It depends on the platform, design, number of products and apps. A simple store with a ready theme can cost relatively little, while a custom-designed store with integrations costs more. Budget separately for inventory, packaging and marketing.

Do I need GST to sell online in India?

Many online sellers do, but the requirement depends on your turnover, products and sales channel, and the rules change. Speak to a chartered accountant before you launch.

Can I run an online store from a small town in Bihar?

Yes. Couriers and aggregators service most pin codes, and payments work the same everywhere. Many sellers manage orders entirely from their phone.
